Privacy Policy

Overview

sadly is a calendar for your year — all your days on one page, colored by how each one actually went. To do that, we store some information about your days, your ratings, and the accounts you connect. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and how to remove it.

What We Store

Account

• Email address — to sign you in and send your evening reflection and weekly summary.
• Schedule preferences — your timezone, evening reflection time, and weekly summary settings.

Calendar

• If you connect Google Calendar, we store access tokens to read your events, and we sync your event titles and times so you can rate them.
• If you use the iPhone app, your on-device calendars sync the same way.

Your ratings & reflections

• Your thumbs up/down on events, your answers to the follow-up questions, the reflection prompts we generate, and the composite day scores that color your calendar.

Health data (optional, iPhone app)

• If you grant access in the iPhone app, we store dated numeric values from Apple Health — sleep, steps, workouts, resting heart rate, HRV, and active energy — with their source. We use them to color your days and tailor your prompts.
• You control this in iOS Health permissions and can revoke it at any time.

Devices & sessions

• Session tokens to keep you signed in, an app token for the iPhone app, and — if you enable notifications — an Apple push token.

Journal Replies: Metadata Only

If you reply to a reflection prompt by email, we process the message in memory to extract metadata only — a sentiment score and word count — and then discard the text. We do not store the content of your journal replies; those stay in your own email inbox.

How We Use Your Information

• Color your year calendar from your ratings, journal sentiment, and health signals.
• Generate a reflection prompt specific to your day.
• Send your evening reflection email, weekly summary, and (if enabled) push reminders.
• Keep you signed in and sync your connected calendar and health data.

We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.

Third-Party Services

• Resend — sends and receives our emails.
• Google — read-only Calendar access via OAuth, only if you connect it.
• Apple — Push Notification service, only if you enable notifications.
• Anthropic (Claude) — optional. If prompt generation is enabled, a summary of your day (event titles, ratings, and health numbers — never your journal replies) may be sent to generate a prompt.
• Google Analytics — basic, aggregate usage analytics, if configured.
• Stripe — payment processing. sadly is currently free; if paid plans are introduced, Stripe would handle payments and we would never see or store your card details.

Data Retention & Deletion

• Journal reply content — never retained (processed in memory, then discarded).
• Everything else — calendar events, ratings, reflections, health metrics, and day scores — retained while your account is active.

Email us to delete your account and we will remove your account and its associated data within 30 days. Disconnecting Google Calendar or revoking Health access stops further syncing immediately.

Your Rights

• Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you.
• Delete — request deletion of your account and all associated data.
• Revoke — disconnect Google Calendar or turn off Health access at any time.
• Opt out — unsubscribe from emails at any time.

Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS, and we use industry-standard practices to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we store and never retain your journal reply content.

Children's Privacy

sadly is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by email. The latest version will always be available at this URL.
