Privacy Policy

Last updated: December 22, 2025

Our Privacy Promise

sadly is built on a simple principle: your journal content is yours alone. Unlike traditional journaling apps, we never store your actual journal entries. Your words stay in your email inbox, where only you can access them.

What We Don't Store

We want to be crystal clear about this: we do not store your journal content. When you send us a journal entry via email, we:

  • Process your email in memory to extract metadata
  • Analyze sentiment and count words
  • Immediately discard the actual text content
  • Never save, log, or backup your journal entries

Your inbox becomes your private, searchable journal archive. We simply help you understand your patterns over time.

What We Do Collect

To provide our service, we collect and store:

Account Information

  • Email address - Used to send you daily prompts, weekly summaries, and to authenticate your account
  • Prompt preferences - Your preferred time to receive daily prompts and timezone

Journal Metadata

  • Word count - How many words were in each entry
  • Sentiment score - A numerical representation of the emotional tone (positive, neutral, negative)
  • Timestamp - When you sent each entry

This metadata helps us show you trends and patterns, but cannot be used to reconstruct your actual journal content.

Billing Information

  • Payment information is processed securely by Stripe
  • We store only a Stripe customer ID to manage your subscription
  • We never see or store your credit card details

How We Use Your Information

  • Send daily prompts - Thoughtful questions delivered at your preferred time
  • Process journal entries - Extract metadata when you reply to prompts
  • Generate weekly summaries - Show you insights about your journaling patterns
  • Manage your subscription - Handle billing and account status
  • Improve our service - Understand usage patterns (in aggregate, never individual content)

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Mailjet - For sending and receiving emails. Mailjet processes your emails to deliver them, but we instruct them not to retain message content.
  • Stripe - For secure payment processing. Stripe handles all payment data according to PCI compliance standards.

Data Retention

  • Journal content - Never retained (processed in memory and discarded)
  • Journal metadata - Retained while your account is active
  • Account information - Retained until you delete your account

If you cancel your subscription or delete your account, we will delete all your metadata within 30 days.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access - Request a copy of the metadata we store about you
  • Delete - Request deletion of your account and all associated data
  • Export - Your journal content already lives in your email inbox
  • Opt out - Unsubscribe from emails at any time

To exercise these rights, contact us at support@in.sadly.com.

Security

We take security seriously. All data is transmitted over HTTPS, and we use industry-standard security practices to protect your information. However, the best security is not storing sensitive data in the first place - which is why we don't store your journal content.

Children's Privacy

sadly is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by email. The latest version will always be available at this URL.
